Last night I beat the sleep! Around 10 to 10:30 PM every night is my I’m-too-tired-to-stay-up, I-have-to-go-to-bed time and usually sleep wins. Last night MOM won (move over Adam Richman, time for MOM vs. SLEEP)! I got to catch up on the final two episodes of Modern Family from LAST season and then enjoy two episodes from this season! It was sad watching the shows from May because I quickly realized that took me a whopping 4 months to actually see them! As a modern momma, I have to say thank goodness for DVR!
To kick off the season we had “Dude Ranch” with such classic Modern Family dynamics that we’ve enjoyed in the first two seasons. For instance, good old “Buffalo Phil” aka the “Boob,” is still desperately trying to gain the approval of his father-in-law by practicing his Cowboy Skills in advance. Another classic MF moment, his expression when they left Dylan at the dude ranch, priceless (almost like don’t leave me “D-Money”)! Gloria, as the ever over-the-top Colombian sex-pot was particularly over-the-top (there’s no better way of putting it) when her ears wouldn’t pop from the plane ride. What made me keep laughing out loud was my own trouble with “plane ears” hours after I have safely arrived at my destination.
A disturbing part of the season opener, at least for me, was when Alex was kissed by Tony Soprano Jr. or whatever his name was. I mean kissed repeatedly! I don’t know if it is just “disturbing” to me or also disappoints me, because as a junior-high geek myself I wished for nothing more than a random guy to come and kiss me as I pretended that I was appalled by the whole thing! I know, tragic. But now as a mother and an aunt to 5 nieces it’s just scary! I really want our second child to be a girl but that image of super-smart, extra-mature Alex falling into the same boy-obsessed frenzy that the rest of us did doesn’t make me feel like it’s easy for a girl to beat the odds! I also wonder what the rest of the season holds for Alex. Like Clair pondered in the season finale: Will Alex turn into another extra-moody Haley-type who becomes ever-increasingly interested in the opposite sex? Dun, dun, dun!!!
Then there is Cam and Mitchell, the extra comic relief to the comic relief. In the bonus episode “When Good Kids Go Bad,” things with Lilly were hitting a little too close to home! The montage of Cam “coddling” Lilly had me in stitches especially where she is seen holding his hand while he’s in the shower! Why? Because there have been many times that felt that Kysen and I were connected at the hip, hand, elbow and head–his clingy-ness crescendo-ed at about 22 months and I finally realized at as a mother I have a right to my own personal space. But what makes Cam’s version so funny is that he needs to be with Lilly (so cute)! Another familiar moment was when Lilly catapulted the little baby that Cam was holding. Not that Kysen has done that yet, but just last week at playgroup a little 7-month-old innocently had his had on my knee and Kysen promptly removed said baby’s hand from his property (mommy). And since we are seriously considering trying for the second baby, sibling rivalry issues are top on my mommy’s list of psychological implications to worry about.
Overall, the first two episodes of Modern Family’s third season were just what I expected: spot-on writing about real issues real families deal with but with that extra over-the-top flair that only this ensemble cast can provide that makes you think that you might just be able to laugh your way through the hardest parts of raising and being a family!
